How do I stop payment on a check?

Contact your bank or credit union right away if you want to stop payment on a check. Your bank or credit union may charge you a fee when you request to stop payment on a check.
Generally, state law provides that if you make your
stop-payment request in time and in writing, the bank or
credit union won’t be able to cash the check for six
months. If you make the request by phone and do not follow
up in writing, it won’t be able to cash the check for
fourteen days. After your stop payment request expires,
the bank or credit union can cash the check.
